My diary- Critical Reading and Reflection

The critical reading class, Aj.Usaa Noytim taught us many things about it. First thing from first week, she taught me about what does the critical reading mean. I knew and understood that the critical reading is reading and understanding the texts what the propose of the author want to tell the audience. When we read the text we have find what is the main idea and what is the propose in the text to make us understand. She gave the sheet to about Mona Lisa's picture the painting of Leonardo da Vinci's to made us critic from the picture. And then read the text. I think I got the knowledge from reading the text. She also taught me the techniques to read the text to critical and understand. For the another week, we learnt how to find main idea in the text. She asked to find main idea from the sheet step by step by reading. She asked to read the paragraphs and find the main idea by six steps each one paragraph. It was very good to find the main idea step by step because it made me understand easier than just only reading the text without techniques for reading.

I also studied fact and opinion, I think it was easy to find the facts and opinion because it eases to find the words from the text, they always use the fact that is true story and they will use the number or anything base from history or true story. If it's the opinion they will use their feeling and what are they think it could be good or bad depend on their opinions. I could identify between the fact and opinion because  I understand what they are.

This semester we learnt many thing about critical reading from the book review, movie review that Aj.Usaa taught how to find the main idea of the reviewer and understand the review by finding the author's purpose, tone, point of view and intended audience. And I could understand the reviewer that they use the negative or positive words on the review from their opinions. After I practiced reading the book review from Teaching Reading Skills in a Foreign Language book review and movie review from The first grader. I could read and understand the book review and movie review from the book and movie that I interested.

We learnt about how to read and understand the advertisements. What kind of words that they use on the advertisements. I could find the theme line and main idea of the advertisements from the words they used. Most of advertisements will use the positive words and adjective words to persuade the audiences to use their products.

The last thing we learnt in the critical reading class it is Reading editorial and article from the news. I got the knowledge and trick to read and understand the text. I can understand that the author do like or do not like that topic from the positive and negative words that they use.

In my opinion I think I really liked this class because Aj.Usaa always gave me new things that I never known before. She gave me the tricks for critical reading. I got many things that I can apply some of the tricks in another subjects. Maybe I could use it in my future when I work. I liked when Aj.Usaa always asked us to share ideas together.





My diary 23/9/2013 - week 15

Today is the last day to study the critical reading class with Aj.Usaa Noytim before the examination. Today we continued study about Reading News Articles from last week. She asked us to share the ideas and answer the questions about "Facebook to share your info for money" on the white board for 6 questions. This is my answers and my ideas from the questions.
1. how many users does Facebook have?
Facebook has over 400 million users.

2.  With what websites has Facebook recently begun sharing users’ personal profile information?
Facebook has recently begun to share information with Pandora and Yelp.

3.  What other changes has Facebook recently made to the website?
Facebook made it so that they could sell information about a user even if that information was thought to be private by the user. Facebook has also begun to be included on other websites.

4.  Even if you block information shared from your site, how could your personal information still be made public?
The information could still be shared from a friend's account.

5.  Do you think Facebook should automatically share your info, and only refrain from doing so if you know about it and go into your settings to opt out?  Explain your answer.
Facebook should not automatically share information because many people do not know that Facebook will share their information and the user should know that information will be shared before it is shared to keep the privacy of the user. Facebook can still make money by displaying targeted advertisements on its own website without having to share the information with other companies or people.

6.  This article states “Facebook wants to make money by selling user information.”  Do you think that is their motive for sharing your info, or is it as Facebook stated, to assist users by "promot[ing] social activity" by sharing your info? Explain your answer.
Facebook's motivation for sharing information is based on making money. Facebook can sell the personal information of its users to companies which will use it for marketing. All for-profit companies exist only to make money. In addition, if Facebook does intend to “promote social activity”, then they will also make money by enhancing the features of their service and attracting new users.

And the last thing for this class Aj.Usaa told us the score we got from the quizzes and checked the work  assignments for someone who still not send them yet. She asked us about the date we can do the exam for the critical reading subject and finished class. I think this lesson was very good and easy to understand. I can apply how to read the article with other subjects.

My diary 19/9/2013 - week 14

Today, I studied about Reading Editorials with Aj.Usaa Noytim. She taught us about what does the editorial means. We read the example editorial about the light rail cars collided with a stopped one-car train in San Francisco 44 people hurt. She told us how to find what was that editorial about. There are facts-number, dates, names,places and exact quotations from the report. If we read another editorial there are the author's opinion and also facts in the article from Another enormous Obamacare "Oops" article. Aj.Usaa asked to find the names of people, organizations and important facts in this article. And find the main idea of the author. We shared our ideas and wrote them on the white board. And I learnt about how to comment from the author's opinion and he brought the fact and wrote them together with his opinion. I think I understand more how to write the comment and bring the fact in the article too. After that we studied Reading News Articles about "Facebook to share your info for money" Aj.Usaa asked us to share the words that associate with Facbook. We could share so much ideas about the words on Facebook because we always use it everyday and anytime. We know it very well. I think it was so interesting lesson. I could learn many thing from this lesson included finding the main idea in the editorials and there are many techniques to read the article. I think I can apply it with other subjects.

My diary 12/9/2013 - week 13

Today I continued study the advertisement from last week with Aj.Usaa Noytim. She taught me how to find the theme line in the advertisements on paper sheet. So, we practiced to find the theme line and what was about in the ads. We did the activities together in the class. We could share our ideas about the theme line from each advertisement.  Finally, she assigned the homework for us to find two advertisements that we can understand and work on it. I really liked this lesson because I could share my idea about it with my classmates. Today, it was very fun because we shared our ideas by writing our ideas about theme line in the ads on the white board.

My diary 5/9/2013 - week 12

I studied about movie review reading with Aj.Usaa Noytim. She asked to write the words associate with the movie review on the white board. There are many words about the movie review. And then she gave us a new worksheet about the first grader movie review. We read two movie reviews and compare between two reviews how is different about the author's opinion. First movie review, when I read it, the writer liked this movie because they always had the positive words and I had to write the detail about the first one on the worksheet. Second movie review, it was not a good movie for the writer because the writer didn't like this movie because they are many negative words and write the detail about it on the worksheet. We had to compare between to review. It was so different because it's the author's opinion. And then she started to teach us about how to read the advertisement.  In the end of the class, she asked us to do the movie review that we like. I really the lesson because I could share my idea. It makes me want to read the movie review after I watch movie. It was a great lesson.

My diary 29/8/2013 - week 11

Today I studied about reading book reviews with Aj.Usaa Noytim. She gave us a worksheet about the Teaching Reading Skills in a Foreign Language book review. We read them and found the author's opinions, both positive and negative comments on the book. Then, we shared the ideas in the class. After that, Aj.Usaa gave us worksheet about the meaning of the fiction and non-fiction and how to read the book review so that we can find the comment of the writer. We did the exercise together and found which statements are negative and which statements are positive. I really liked the lesson because it helped me learn more about how to read book reviews. I could see many book reviews on the internet but sometimes I didn't understand them. Today I learned about it, and now if I read another book review I will understand it more and more. It was a fantastic lesson.

My diary 22/8/2013 - week 10

Today I studied with Aj.Usaa Noytim. Today we had critical reading's exam before class. I could do some of them, it was not too difficult for me. After that I had study about how to read the text or message. We learnt about the author's purpose, author's tone, author's point of view and intended audience to understand the text that what's about. Aj.Usaa gave us a new sheet about how to observe the main idea in paragraph. We learnt about the Jet skiers that killing innocent people and themselves. We practiced to find the author purpose, tone, point of view and intended audience from the text together. And then she told us the meaning about the vocabularies that we haven't see them before. She gave us the worksheets to practiced by ourselves to find the main idea that what's about in the text. I really like this course because it made me know how to find the main idea so easily. But, it was quite difficult to understand.

My diary 15/8/2013 - week 9

I continued studying The world's oldest; First Grader with Aj.Usaa Noytim. She asked us to explain the summarize that we did from last week with my classmate and explain to everybody in the classroom. And then she asked to read the texts on the sheet about the first grader and answer the questions from the first grader's story. After that she asked us to share the ideas about the immigration each country into the group. I did Canada's immigration. We shared the ideas in the group first and shared the idea to my classmate. I got so much knowledge about the immigration in many countries. Finally, we sent the summarize of the first grader to Aj.Usaa. I really liked the lesson today because I could share any ideas with my friends. I got more knowledge about the immigration and reading skill because we had to read and understand it and could explain it then. This lesson is so useful because I got many new words and new proverb. It was a wonderful class.

My diary 25/7/2013 - week 8

I studied Learning Experiences in the worksheet with Aj. Usaa Noytim. She gave us the sheet and she asked what does"you're never too old to learn" means. She asked us to explain the meaning and share idea of the proverb together. Aj. Usaa asked us to do the activities about learning experiences in the worksheet by answer the questions about the vocabularies  and share idea together with my friends. After that she advised the movie for us that's the grader. It was about a man who is 84 years old, he really wanted to study and learn more and more with the primary school in Kenya his name is Kimani N'gan'ga Maruge. It was so different age between him and other students. It was a very good movie that I ever seen. It teaches me even though we are old but we can study as other people who are young. Because we can learn anytime and anywhere we want to study, learning never end for us. Finally, Aj. Usaa asked to summaries the first grader's story and make a comment what I learn from the movie. It was a very nice lesson I can apply it in my diary life.


My diary 18/7/2013 - week7

I went to attend the NPRU national academic conference. The research for sustainable local development preparing for AEC.

 First lecturer, from Germany,  discussed the risk of earthquakes in the future as well as recent natural disasters in Thailand and  throughout South East Asia. He talked about the problems that Thailand has had with disasters. He showed us  pictures and charts of disasters in Southeast Asia and talked about how they are different from each other and how violent they can be; they can be categorized  as low, moderate, high or extremely high. We have to solve this problem for sustainable local development in Thailand because if more disasters happen often in Thailand, then we can’t develop at all. Everyone must work together to solve this terrible problem. 

The second lecturer, Surayut  Juranon, is privy counselor or former prime minister of Thailand. He discussed the philosophy of the efficient economy of His Majesty which our King has given us for more than 30 years. Mr.Surayut also explained how to apply it to sustainable local development.  He said that we have to value people and that they should learn equality and try to keep pace with the changing world so that they can develop sustainable economy. The King always gives us advice to allow us to apply in the right way. 


I got the idea to develop myself for prepare to follow the AEC that they will happen soon. They will be the unity so I have to develop my languages because it will be useful in the future.

My diary 11/7/2013 - week 6

I had to study The age of immigration with Aj.Usaa Noytim. She asked us to answer the questions in the sheet before we read the text about immigration. I learnt how to find main idea step by step by reading. She asked to read the paragraphs and find the main idea by six steps each one paragraph. They had many exercises that we had to do. We also had to find the words from the paragraph to match with the meaning or synonyms and did the word in context from the age of immigration. For the last activity Aj.Usaa Noytim asked us to do homework that we have to organize the group for five person in one group and research to find information about immigration from our country into the united states and into our own country other countries. It was very good lesson but it was very challenging for me because it was very difficult to understand and find main idea step by step. It took me a long time to find the main idea and read many passages. I think I should try to practice more and more.

My diary 4/7/2013 - week 5

Today I had to study about identifying the main idea from a passage with Aj.Usaa Noytim. At first, she asked us to explain the meaning of a main idea and how it is important. We had to share our ideas together in the class. After that, she gave us the sheet Living in a Multicultural Society. She taught us about the strategies of how to find the main idea in a passage step by step. At first, we have to form a hypothesis and test it by reading the next sentence and ask ourselves how does this sentence support our hypothesis? If yes, the information will support our original hypothesis, if it does not support our guess, then we have to revise the hypothesis. Next, she asked us to read and practice the passages on the sheets she gave us. We practiced so much together in the class by reading seven passages to find the main idea in the passages in steps.
I think, It was such a difficult lesson because it's difficult to find the main idea; we have to read so much and do it step by step. It was challenging my ability to understand. However, I could still understand some of them and now I know how to find the main idea step by step.

My diary 27/6/2013 - week 4

Today, I studied to distinguish fact and opinions with Aj.Usaa Noytim. She asked us about the meaning of the fact and opinions, how is it different. She asked us to made the groups and we did the activities together. At first, she asked us to create the sentence about the fact for five sentences and opinion for five sentences. And we had to present about those sentences to share our ideas. For the second activity she gave us the work sheets. We shared the ideas for the questions and answer what is the fact and opinion in the sentences. Today we did not do the quiz because the time was not enough. It was very good lesson because it was quite easy to distinguish between fact and opinion. I think I can understand the lesson very well. I can applied  this lesson to use in the diary life.

My diary 20/6/2013 - week 3

Today I studied Popular Culture Critical Reading. Aj.Usa asked us to bring the sheets up and read the passage one about the origin of Sushi and the popularity Sushi in the United States. At first, she asked us to find the English definition of the words in the context. She asked us to shared the definitions on the white board.  After that she asked us to read the passages several times and answer the questions after the passages. We shared the answers together in group and then analyzed the passages together. The last assignment was the quiz about the passages that we read. She assigned us to analyze and summary of the Popularity Sushi in the United States. Today, it was a very good lesson because I could practice my reading, writing and analyzing in this class. I felt good that we could share the ideas together. It was so difficult passages, I was so confuse with some sentences.

My diary 13/6/2013 - week 2

Today I studied the introduction to Critical Reading. At first Aj.Usa showed us the Mona Lisa's picture the painting of Leonardo da Vinci's on the projector. And then she asked us to look at the picture and analyze the Mona Lisa's picture for 5 minutes and let us shared the ideas to everyone in the class. I also shared the idea of the picture for my idea, "I think she looks so sad cause I can see from her eyes. The background is so darkness and the sky is so cloudy, it's a symbol of the sadness." After we shared the ideas, she gave us the paper of the introduction to Critical Reading and let us read the text about the Leonado da Vinci's painting Mona Lisa more. In the text tells us about we should reading the text as when we are reading the painting and how to analyze the painting. It tells us that we shouldn't believe everything that the author writing and we can analyze and find the argument in the text. After we read the text, Aj.Usa gave us the quiz about the critical reading  and why we need to take a critical approach to reading, It was quite difficult for me to answer those questions. I should get more practice for the critical reading and read more the texts. Today I think it was a very nice lesson because I could shared my idea to everyone and practiced me to analyze from the picture that I haven't done it before.

My diary 6/6/2013 - week 1

Today I had to study critical reading with Aj.Usa Noytim for the first time this semester. She explained the syllabus for the course, and reviewed the reading techniques from the first year we studied. When my teacher asked us about the techniques, we forgot some of them. She then reviewed the rules for the class, which are that we should have responsibility, be punctual, and wear a polite uniform. She asked us to get together in groups of four or five people. She asked us to help each other think about what critical reading is, and what we expect from this class. We then had to present about it. I think, it is a very good class because critical reading is very important to learn for when I will work in the future.


She asked us to go back and write our dairy blogs about what we studied in the class, what is difficult, and what is easy. We have added her on facebook because she will create a group for us to share opinions about it. It was very nice class, I felt so exited and challenged because critical reading is very difficult to understand.
